Swiss Textiles Award 2009

Nominate six young upcoming designers, invite them to Zurich to present their upcoming collection on the runway and choose one winner in the end, that gets the Swiss Textiles Award and 100'000 Euros prize money – that's what the Stella Contemporary Fashion Award 2009 was all about in short. Marking already its 10th anniversary, they also invited all the past winners from previous years and gave Rodarte the opportunity to once again show their upcoming collection on the runway. Previous winners are Rodarte (USA), Marios Schwab (GB), Bruno Pieters (BE), Christian Wijnants (BE), Haider Ackermann (BE), Raf Simons (BE), Benoît Missolin (FR), Tran Hin Phu (CH), Daniel Herman (CH). Such an event to be happening in Switzerland is quite remarkable, since the fashion industry is very little compared to other parts of the world. The winner of the Swiss Textiles Award was chosen by an international jury with people working for l'Officiel France, Vogue.com UK, i-D Magazine, Annabelle and others, which of course all attended the event as well.
This year's finalists were: Erdem (UK), Alexis Mabille (F), Ohne Titel (USA), Thakoon Panichgul (USA), Peter Pilotto (UK) and Alexander Wang (USA). In the end, there was no big surprise when they announced Alexander Wang as this year's winner.

Erdem

Alexis Mabille

Peter Pilotto

Alexander Wang

Ohne Titel

Thakoon Panichgul

Rodarte

Alexander Wang as the lucky winner

Choosing Wang as this year's winner was a pretty obvious choice and there's nothing wrong with that since he's doing a really great job – yet I would have appreciated it if they had chosen another designer like Thakoon or Mabille, which I liked a lot as well. While for other young designers the prize money would be a significant financial aid, it's probably just the cherry on top of the cake for Wang, who's already on top of his game at such an early stage of his career and age. Who would have been your choice?

  2. honestly from the pictures i see here i thought alexander wang did a great job, and he probably should have won. If i had to pick another designer that i think stood out it would have to be ohne tite. Although i think for some of the looks i would have reconsiderd sending down the runway... like the color items in the front, the pieces more in back are a lot better for sure.

  3. I have to say that judging purely from the photos, I likes the Mabille collection a lot more. But I have to admit that the details on Wang's collection look stunning - it must have been incredible to see them live!

Having moved here from NY, I am quite relieved and excited to find that fashion seems to be getting more of a stronghold on Swiss soil :-) It was about time!

  6. I do admit that I am a strong fan of Thakoon, however I am glad that Alexander Wang won - he is obviously so talented and creative and I think that should be rewarded. However, although I have not heard of them prior to now, I was very impressed by Erdem. Their use of shape; colour; textures and repetition makes me a new fan.
Hope you had a wicked time.

  7. Haider Ackermann is french, when you spend
3 yearsof your all life in Belgium, you don't become belgian.
I don't see anything "belgian" in his work...

  8. i find the choice is excellent. i thought wang did the best job yet i agree with you saying that he didn't really need it. thakoon was my other favourite but he just as well is well known and successful in america.. i thought the others collection all preety good but the only included a few designs where i was like: WOW! alexander wang's collection is just WOW.. he deserves it even though he's the most successful.. you say the choice was obvious still i think only because he's already a star that shouldn't be a reason to not pick the him when he did the best..
    like your pictures though:)
    keep up the good work

  9. I also liked Erdem and Peter Pilotto because of the nice dresses.
I'm glad that Wang won, he's probably more famous in Europe, but Thakoon is as known as Wang in the usa, he even did a collection for target, like, last summer :)

  14. Even though I love Wang, Mabille's collection was gorgeous! Maybe she deserved a chance.

  15. Alexander had the overall show right but I feel his clothes really are kinda tacky not to say being ugly isn't beautiful sometimes. I think Peter Pilotto had a pretty promising collection yes there are things that could do with a bit of a fix up like the fit for one and the need for variation but there is just something edgy but at the same time staying on the cliff-top and not plunging into the abyss of bad taste

  18. erdem. erdem. erdem. the season before this, when they did the lace & blurred florals, I fell in love. and this one was amazing as well. classy yet fun & flirty. so much love for this brand.
you're right, it doesn't seem right that wang won when he already has all this recognition BUT I'm sure he could use the money too. If there's one thing fashion documentaries have taught me it's that it takes awhile to become profitable. I mean, Luella just stopped trading. In this economy, I'm sure even Wang needs the help.
