Tran Hin-Phu

As some of you probably know, I am currently studying at the University of Arts in Zurich at the photography department. I just finished my first semester, which included an exhibition of our work at the end of the semester. We get one theme every semester and in the end we have to come up with an idea and produce a work (loosely) based on that theme. This semester's theme was "dream, beauty and fun", which are synonyms for our consumer society. I made a photo series about Swiss fashion designer Tran Hin-Phu and followed him during the preparations for his fashion show at the Fashion Days Zurich 2010 back in November. I filmed a little walkthrough of the exhibition with everyone's work that you can watch here. The video below shows my work self-printed as a zine with the lovely help of Lisa Mettier.

  2. Love the photography!

Oh, and I think you should make a video where we can hear you talk, perhaps an interview in the near future? :)

  7. Nice! I really like how you chose something that shows not only "dream, beauty, and fun" but also showed the consumerism you talked about, like when you showed the Paul Mitchell booth or the woman peering in through the window and then the people watching at the show.

Also, is there any reason why you chose to shoot in black & white?

  11. Congratulations on the zine! You must have got a lot of positive feedback on this project. I think you encompassed the brief perfectly because fashion is the epitome of consumerism. Its creative and beautiful but there is also a very dark and dangerous side to it.

    Love the monochrome.

  13. I love that no page is wasted. Every image holds its own integrity without the support of being in a collection! Which is what modern fashion photographers take for granted when they have digital cameras.

  16. nettewetten: es lag eigentlich nicht an der bindung sondern weil ich die seiten viel zu stark gefalzt habe und sie so schon halb einrissen.

ketija: i am actually planning on doing a zine somewhen in spring to sell to people cheaply. not to make any profit but to get my photos to people.

olson: should be possible with most printers nowadays
